From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. I approached one of those who were standing by and began asking him the exact meaning of all this. Daniel went at once and obtained royal permission for more time, so that he could tell the king what the dream meant. Daniel 2:9-11 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof, Daniel 1:18,19 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar, We are not told in so many words that this extension of time was granted, or that Daniel undertook to show more than the interpretation of the dream. We are told the Old Testament prophet could not see the distance between the first and the second coming of our Lord, just as one cannot see the distance between two mountains, when viewed from afar. Daniel said that his thoughts were greatly alarming him and his face grew pale. Our text challenges such a conclusion, and later prophecies in Daniel further document that the coming of the King and of the kingdom will be some time further in the future. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. 10 If any one is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if any one kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. He only called on him in a moment of sheer panic when no one else could help, and only then because of the recommendation of the queen mother. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 (See Daniel 2:24, Note. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. The saints should also expect the wicked to prosper, for a season. Lets pray and ask God to teach us and guide us as we look at His prophetic word. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. Daniels response to the vision was far from assuring or calming. The inter-relationship between the prophecies of chapters 2 and 7 is demonstrated on the following page: Deterioration: Gold to iron mixed with clay, Deterioration: Nearly human to blaspheming beast. Nebuchadnezzar's dream, Daniel tells him, was about a statue with a golden head, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, and legs of iron, which is crushed by a giant stone, which itself becomes a mountain (vv. The Son of Man was also Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8). The other seven will then likely submit out of fear or a sense of the unavoidable consequences of resisting represented by this little horn growing larger than the seven. 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it. (1 Thessalonians 1:910, NASB95)[6] Finally, the more we know about the future, the more our hearts should be moved to prayerful petition for those who will face the judgment of God if they do not turn in faith to Jesus Christ. 27 Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. Not only was he greatly alarmed and physically sick, but he says he also kept the matter to himself. The horn continues to sound off while the court is being set up for judgment. (10) Daniels preoccupation is with the last beast, rather than the first three. He surpasses those before him by speaking boastfully, then blaspheming, and finally seeking to overthrow Gods order. Chapter 7 reveals in broad terms what the future holds. Our attention should be given to what is clearly and emphatically said. As Daniel watches, "four great beasts," each different from the others, emerge from the dark waters (verse 3). Because Daniel possessed wisdom bestowed by God and was conscientious in his work, he not only prospered during the reigns of successive rulers, but King Darius planned to put him in charge of the entire kingdom. 1:17) that Daniel had understanding in dreams; and here we have an early and eminent instance of it, which soon made him famous in the court of Babylon, as Joseph by the same means came to be so in the court of Egypt. In my opinion, the most dramatic reference of our Lord to His identity as the Son of Man comes as the Lord Jesus stands on trial before the Sanhedrin and the high priest: 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, in order that they might put Him to death; 60 and they did not find it, even though many false witnesses came forward. If you remember from two weeks ago the bear was raised up on one side, this was to indicate that one part of this united kingdom overshadowed the other portion. Because of his wisdom, and the favour of God, Daniel rose to a position within the Babylonian government. 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. His followers too must be alert and ready for His return (24:44). He is more beastly in the beginning and more human in the end, paralleling the character of Nebuchadnezzar. Those who rejected the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of Man, would mourn when they saw Him returning in the clouds: And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30). Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation. Editing allows an author to set aside details which are not significant and focus on the essence of the message he is trying to communicate. Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. The point of this prophecy is not to tell us who future kings will be, but rather what they will be like.
